Pod, Pod, Pod, Pod… c’mon, Apple… get real

If Apple spent as much time on fixing their bugs as they do on this sort of nonsense, I’m sure I (for one) would be a much happier Apple fan boy.

Seriously, after the stupid problems I had with basic things on my Snow Leopard update, now my wife’s iPhone shutting down randomly after the 3.1 update, and my own iPhone starting to do other funky stuff (like constantly lose my wifi settings), I think Apple should stop wasting time on stupid stuff like this and get back to their knitting.

Daniel Kokin has spent the last nine years, off and on, working on a design for a video projector. The unique shape of the design is, according to Kokin, best described as a pod, so it’s no surprise he decided to call it a “Video Pod.” When he tried to file for a trademark for Video Pod in 2007, Apple filed an objection with the USPTO.

“Like Apple’s iPod registrations and applications, the Video Pod application covers a device that is or will be used to transmit video for entertainment and other purposes,” Apple wrote in its filing. “As a result the similarity between Apple’s marks and Applicant’s Video Pod mark and the highly related nature of the parties’ goods and services, Applicant’s Video Pod mark is likely to cause confusion, mistake or deception in the trade and among purchasers.”

What a joke!

Honestly, am I really beholden to Apple every time I use the word “pod”?! Ridiculous! This is where some of this trade mark and IP stuff gets a little nuts… the word “pod” has been used for a very long time to mean a whole range of things that aren’t necessarily related to an iPod. That Apple should suddenly feel it owns the word is just stupid. That a guy can’t create a device totally unrelated to a music player and use the term “pod” in its name is so ridiculous I would hope a judge would throw it of court and charge Apple with punitive damages for wasting everyone’s time.

Methinks Apple should hire less lawyers and more software people to fix their problems. This would make me happier, especially since I know in about 15 minutes my iPhone is going to ask me for my WEP key again…

I totally love my Apple stuff, but right now, it’s NOT just working…

I’ve had no problems with snow leopard yet. Can’t afford an iphone so don’t know about that.

well, my printer is working now, after the recent update. plus, many of my apps are now working again after updates came through for them as well.

iphone thing is a real bugger. both nic and i have iphones, and they both have issues after the 3.1 upgrade, and different issues at that. all of this is amply logged on the web where thousands and thousands of iphone users have been complaining of exactly the same issues. not good.

Hey! I’m confused
ipod ipod ipod!!!!

I recently had a challenging dinner & evening with a dear brother from the Maasi Tribe in Tanzania.
He came to Australia to tell of the ministry in which he is involved in his country.

I was rather apprehensive about his coming to the land of plenty and wondered if he would have a
battle in seeing the affluence here and the desperate need in his own country

How many pastoral ipods he saw in his time here. Just to think 15 of them would provide a good functional
class room to educate students so keen to learn!!!

ipods not working!!! computers mal functioning!!!! and a needy world!!
Help I’m confused!!!!!

hey, john… nice to hear from you! hope you are doing well.

well, i guess it’s a classic context issue, isn’t it? it is always a challenge connecting with 3rd world people, and recognizing how blessed we are and what responsibility comes with that blessing.

i’m personally not against wealth or feeling bad about being privileged to live in a wonderful place like australia (or owning an ipod for that matter)… i personally recognize that privilege because i am an immigrant from africa (and could perhaps have been described as a refugee at one point in our journey). i guess the real challenge comes with being a good steward and ensuring that we are a blessing to others as God would have us be. no question , our context demands more of us. not shame or embarrassment, but rather to be a generous conduit to those in need.

the alternative, i guess is to sell everything we have, including those essentials like the house and car, send it all to kenya, and keep a little for a boat ride there because we won’t be in a position to live here! :-)

by the way, i do remember visiting kenya back in the late 90′s. i remember leaving my mobile phone at home because i figured i was going to africa and wouldn’t be able to use it. much to my surprise, i was amazed to see every second person in nairobi with a mobile chatting away down the streets… bit of a shock, actually. globalisation is rapidly changing the landscape.
