Life Updates for 2008-04-17

  • Very hot and humid here in Thailand. Spent the morning in a meeting at Starbucks – there’s one in Khon Kaen but not in Perth! What gives?! #
  • Aaaah…. The simple pleasures of sitting in the open back of a ute down a Thai highway at night! Needed to cool down after a spicy dinner. #

I still don’t know whether the fact that Perth is one of the last places on earth to get Starbucks is a good thing or a bad thing?

Starbucks, like McDonald’s, is one of those places I have mixed feelings about. Sure, the quality is average, but at least it’s consistent, and you can feel reasonably confident walking into a Starbucks anywhere in the world that you will get the same level of service – it’s a sanctuary when you need it.

But then again there’s the big issues of mass-commercialisms, monopolies, and the negative effects on local cafe culture – so I’m still undecided as to whether I want Starbucks in Perth or not.

Be interested to hear others’ opinions on the matter…

I’m with Paul, there’s a Starbucks at a huge mall between where I live and Moscow. I can tell you now that both McDonalds and Starbucks are sanctuaries here. Surprisingly though, McDonalds here tastes better and seems to be less fatty than at home. Fortunately there isn’t any local cafe culture to compete with, AND mostly here people make coffees in restaurants/cafes much like those described in Deano’s “It started as a journey…” Anyway, what I really want to say here is that I desparately long for what you are doing right now Mark. I miss those open ute drives at night through the tropical air. Sitting in a little restaurant eating ridiculously hot food and just being with the Thai people. I look forward to reading about your trip!
Praying for you!
