Political ignorance

This video is very scary, but I guess it’s scary to me how poorly informed many folks are about basic political issues anyways. As Australians, we could laugh at some of the feeble responses to questions about what Sarah Palin actually believes in and stands for, but the truth is that most of us [...]

Absurd war support

According to this bottom line piece, British forces in Hellmand Province, Afghanistan, have 20 helicopters to support 9,000 troops – not sure who’s running that whole effort, but that’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of in a modern war scenario…

Voting Weirdness

I had no idea of the existence of this weirdness, but discovered this morning that since 1984 here in Australia, there has been a special dispensation to allow British citizens to vote in Australian federal elections!
I’m quite amazed at this. I cannot think of a SINGLE good reason to allow this, and there is [...]

Tortuous Evangelicals

This is just plain disturbing. According to a CNN piece, “the more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey.”
“More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use [...]

More representative democracy

So, again, we have in the Australian parliament the case where a single senator gets to make the call on a huge issue. I don’t know, but this kind inordinate leverage these handful of senators have really irritates me for a range of reasons. I don’t like these guys nickel and diming for [...]

Obama’s Inauguration on Speed

Apple has this wonderfully interesting “Summary” utility service that allows you to obtain a summary of large chunks of text. The algorithm used is complex and it always intrigues me that somewhere in Cupertino there is a person/s playing around with this sort of stuff.
I decided to run the tool over Obama’s recent inauguration [...]

The World is a Jumbo Jet

From a conversation between a journalist and a senior British diplomat:
“The world, Matt, is a jumbo jet”, he whispered.
“The Americans are in the cockpit and First Class. Everyone else is in Economy and we [the Brits] are in Business with the possibility of an upgrade.”
This is both funny and not funny, and likely quite an [...]

“Representative” democracy

I’ve been reflecting on politics a bit lately, given the interesting times in which we live, and especially watching the current Australian debate on the government stimulus package working its way through parliament.
We’ve had a situation a few times in recent history where independent senators have held extraordinary influence, and I don’t know if I’m [...]

Will someone just show some leadership?!

Apparently, here in WA we’re
to be confronted with yet another vote on daylight savings in May. This is ridiculous!
When are we going to have a government in WA that will simply exercise leadership and do the thing that needs to be done? On purely economic grounds, and especially in the current situation, can [...]

Wow!

This whole situation seems ridiculous in this day and age, but as someone who visits Thailand regularly for missional purposes, it’s a bit of a worry. And, could I even get in trouble for saying something negative from outside of Thailand, even here in a blog?! Crazy.
