Chasers Fun?

I haven’t seen it myself, but I read news reports of the most recent Chasers offering which features a self-described piece of “black humour” focused on the Make a Wish Foundation.

I’ll be up front and say that I personally find the Chasers to be of an infantile, try-hard sort of humour that I just don’t find funny most of the time. I think I have a pretty good sense of humour, I like a good laugh, and I’ve tried to get into them, but I just find them lame. I once loaded a bunch of their stuff on my ipod for a long flight and regretted it about 15 minutes into the first episode. I just don’t think they’re that funny. I know lots of people just LOL at the Chasers, but I just get them. I’m not a wowser – I just don’t they’re that funny.

So, with that admission out of the way, perhaps I’m a bit biased when I say that their latest stunt just makes me want to punch them square in the face for bring so despicable and unbelievably crass. And I’m not joking. It’s the kind of thing that makes me so angry, kind of like when I see someone being bullied, or when I hear about child abuse. I get angry, and i think Jesus would be angry too. Sometimes, it’s ok to be angry. In fact, sometimes it’s the very right response to very wrong things.

I can’t even begin to think what sort of sick mind would contrive such a skit as being funny. It goes so far across the line that I think that if the ABC had any integrity they would pull the show completely, but we know they won’t do that. Oh, it’s just satire?! Really?! No, it’s not satire – it’s sick. There is a difference.

But, I imagine there’s a bunch of people out there who think making fun of dying kids is a hoot. I’m just a bit too tightly wound and maybe I should lighten up a little. Yada yada yafa. Yeah… well, maybe I don’t get it… but I don’t want it either. It’s wrong. Don’t care how you slice it, it’s just plain wrong.

Sorry!

I feel I need to make an apology.

For months now, my activity here on this blog has been next to nothing. Much of my online attention has been focused on Facebook/Twitter. Lots of short snippets, comments and short interactions, but no extended pieces of thought or reflection on anything important. I’m not dissing Twitter or Facebook, because they’re brilliant tools for a certain task and type of connection. But I have realized that I’ve seriously neglected my love of writing and thinking and arguing for things that I think are important. That’s not been good.

So, I’m committing myself to much more time here in my blog. There’s a bunch of big things going on in my brain and my life, and I think there’s value in me sharing this stuff. Partly because it helps me think things through (with the help of a little critique and comment), but also because it might just be helpful to someone else. I’ve learned an awful lot over the past couple of years (in particular), and maybe I can share some wisdom gained the hard way.

Anyways, I’m sorry that this space has been so neglected. Stay tuned! I promised to be more active and hopefully stimulating than daily status updates.
