Three quick observations after a day with my iPhone…

First, the input issue I was worried about doesn’t seem to be a problem. With a bit of practice plus the corrective feature in the keyboard software means you can blast away and the device seems to do a pretty cool job of interpreting what you mean. This is a big and pleasing surprise to me.

Secondly, the 3G issues being complained about worldwide seem to be a very real problem. I am amazed at the terrible 3G reception in our area. I’m hoping that this is just a regional thing, but even so, that’s hard to believe given that here in Baldivis we are not exactly out in the bundies. The biggest problem is that the iPhone will latch on to a very weak 3G signal wherever possible, and doesn’t seem smart enough to flip to a much stronger 2G signal quick enough before you hit issues trying to do things.

Finally, after a day, I still haven’t made many calls on the phone, which seems consistent with other users who find themselves primarily using the iPhone for non-call functions mostly. Interesting.

So far…

Next big thing to watch will be data usage after scary stories in the media.

One other quick thing I’ll pick up on later, I’m sure – battery life sucks. Wow! And especially if you are hooked onto an Exchange server with push updates. Wow!

I’ve been eyeballing the iPhone scene for a while now, readying myself for the inevitable purchase, and yesterday I made the move and got one.

It’s going to be an interesting transition, and for a while I’ll be using two phones while I get things set up, but there is no question that there is no device on the market quite like this. Wow factor is very high, and this is from a guy who has played a bit with a lot of technology.

  how I would pay for it! #

nic and i were in a mild state of shock yesterday to discover that an old friend/acquaintance of our from our teenage years has pled guilty to a bunch of sexual offences… really stunned us because we just would never have guessed it (i suppose that’s one of the problems with this stuff), and because it was so close to us. good chance we probably know some of the victims too, possibly, and it’s horrible to think that some of this might have been going on while we had a bunch of contact with him.
