The latest news about the iPhone coming to Australia on Vodafone is causing a bit of stir, but to be honest I’m not that excited. I thought I would be because I do love all things Apple, but I can’t see myself getting an iPhone. For me, the biggest issues are two-fold…
Firstly, input on the iPhone is unbelievably slow, and if you’re someone who uses his phone a lot for email (like me), then the touch screen input is a killer. I know several people across the world who have changed back to Blackberry as their primary device (keeping the iPhone as a secondary plaything for surfing and non-essential stuff).
Secondly, I was listening to a Macworld Weekly piece the other day, where all of the contributors were lamenting the battery life on the iPhone, and how they all ended up having to shut down various functions on the phone to make it last a day. This, to me, would be unacceptable. And, with 3G, it’s only going to get worse. I was surprised to hear this expert consensus about the battery problem because I reckon this is a big problem, and it’s certainly something I don’t have ANY issues with on the Blackberry. In fact, from what I understand, the RIM people are fanatical about trimming power consumption on their devices, so this is never likely to be an issue. I don’t want a device that I’m afraid to use because it might not last the day. One contributor, Merlin Mann (of 43Folders fame) made a joke about the “iPhone thing” where it seems to be fine and then suddenly tells you you’re out of power and boom…
So, although I would love an iPhone as a secondary plaything, I just can’t see myself being able to justify the considerable cost nor the hassle of carrying two devices, which I’m glad to have done away with some years ago now. I reckon the Blackberry Curve has to be the best phone I’ve ever had for what I need a phone for – absolutely superlative. I haven’t found a thing I dislike yet.
i think i’m figuring out a good definition for “leadership”… leadership is largely about making good decisions in a timely way. it’s about being decisive and picking what should happen next, and being good at that.
at the end of the day, it seems to me that there are a bunch of things that leadership is about, but when it comes right down to it, that’s leadership in its purest form. there’s other stuff that follows the decision, but that’s the point that starts it all, and it’s the point that non-leaders can’t get past well.
just a thought i’m thinking…
